The Police Caution Comprehension Tool

My Vision:

  1. For vulnerable people to have the support they need to be able to provide their account for allegations against them

  2. To have an Intermediary Service for Suspects integrated into the current system

When the HAIS project went live in 2020, there was revealed a glaring omission in service provision. A vulnerable person who is accused of a crime is the only individual in the entire justice system to be unable to access the specialised intermediary support.

In her Nursing career, Rachel witnessed the injustice of this firsthand. Vulnerable patients and service users not being able to provide their account and the ramifications of that following them potentially for years. All because they were deemed not be able to understand a paragraph of legal warning which even seasoned police officers can struggle with.

So she decided to do something about it!

It is a huge and complex task with many competing factors but her passion drives her to make a difference wherever she can. This task being made more complex due to her own health disabilities.

The first contact a vulnerable suspect has with complex legal wording in interview is the Caution, written in 1984!

So that's where she has started.....

The simplified version has been approved and is being used across the UK, with the initial aim of testing it in practice and so assessing its effectiveness.
